I thought of that, but wouldn't it retard rather that advance?

No, I don't think I have a compression problem, but I guess you never know until you check. I thought I would do a few things that I'm capable of checking before I get someone to check compression. |

Maybe I overstated the point. I am around 2000+ RPM's when this has happened. The car usually pulls sufficient enough at that RPM, I like to cruise between 2-3k around town, shifting a little north of 3k maybe 4k when I require a more speedy giddyup. But I worry more about the ping at WOT. The other night I went out purposly to try it out after once again cleaning my MAF and checking for loose connections and such... I staerted off giving the throttle about a 3/4 pull reving to about 4-4.5k shifted nice and smoothly, giving another 3/4 pull and the car kinda went through a little roughness about halfway into the power band and seemed to clear and go good. The rattle seemed to happen about the same time, but it's hard to be sure, because I was surprised with the stumble. I have gone out since and everything seemed fine. It seems to be an intermitent problem! |

I was talking to my tuner today and he said that the pinging at low revs should be able to be tuned out because most Ford timing tables have real close steps at lower revs giving much more tunability.
I don't know that he's looked specifically at the tables for the SVTF but he does a fair number of other Fords and he did my custom tune.

"Was the problem there before and after you installed your tune?"

You really should check compression. There is a possibility that your compression is too high for the 87 octane you ran before the tune. Then when they increased timing with the tune, even though you use 91 or 93 octane, it wasn't right or the extra compression.
If you check compression or remove and inspect the head (compression check is obviously easier) you will find some useful information.

Well, I put my old PVC that I changed for no real reson other than it was a couple of years old and cheap, and I thought I noticed that the #3 plug wire clicked into place better when I was checking them, no ping thus far. I don't really know if I did anything or not, but she seems to be fine, I cross my fingers and knock on wood....thanks for all the suggestions....

Factory gap is .051" on the Zetec and .054" for the SPI. If you have a hotter coil, you can run more gap.
