The stock HP on the SPI is 110hp. The stock on the Zetec is 130hp. I'm pretty sure the Zetec is 1.9L, not 2.0

The 2.0 spi has 110 HP, 125 TQ

The 2.0 zetec has 130, 135 TQ

What engine do you have now in your car and what do you plan on doing? It's hard to say which one to get unless you give us more info.

Gigaherz- lets mw tell you like it is. I have the 1.6 zetec-se (uk version) Our engines were developed half Yamaha/half Ford. The engine is reversely setup to yours- intake and exhausts on opposite sides. Its rated at 100 bhp but it feels more like 90. Its a bummer to try and find performance parts for this engine , leaving me with the option of puttin in a 2.0
I can get a spit port engine as well as a zetec 2.0 from you guys in the USA.
Then put some power to the asphalt.Unless you have recommendations.

The Zetec-SE is a nice alloy block, alloy head engine. One swap that might work would be to import a Zetec-SE 1.7 from Europe from a Puma -- 125 HP in the standard Puma or 155 HP if you can find a wrecked Puma ST160.

Before you go to the trouble of getting a motor shipped then doing the swap look into performace parts for the 1.6 Zetec. The Zetec 1.6 was also used in the European Fiesta-S. My cousin in Madrid, Spain has a 1999 1.6 Zetec ZX5. I think that engine was rated at 108 HP.

If you swapped a 110 HP 2.0 SPI for the 108 HP 1.6 Zetec you would be swapping low end torque for high end HP. Before you go to the trouble of an engine swap see if you can get performance parts from British or German tuning firms. There are cams, headers, turbo kits, etc. available for the 1.6 Zetec.

If you do decide to do a swap put the biggest, baddest engine that will bolt in. Check to determine if the Zetec-S is a VCT motor. It would probably be easier to do a direct VCT for VCT (or non-VCT for non-VCT) swap. I would probably go with a 2.0 Zetec or if you are bold, the 2.3 Duratec HE 4 cylinder.

(I own both a VCT Zetec ('00 ZX2 S/R) and a CVH 1.9 ('95 Escort LX wagon) so I speak for both sides...)

Well, john seems to know a bit about this so I would go along with what he said. I would look into what engines came with what trannies as well and try and get one that was bolted to the same one you have now to make your life easier. I would stick with a zetec no matter what unless you plan on going with a standalone computer.

JOhn, hey thanks alot for the advice i will take it in strides. I do however have one question. You say that there are headers and Turbo kits available- I have not seen any company that carries headers for the 1.6 zetec-SE.
And as far as i know there is only Vaanaken who is working on the turbo kit for the 1.6.
In the mean time Hondas are killing me daily.
Im actually looking for a reputable machinists to port and polish the head and Turbo (home made) to get up to about 150-165 bhp- that should be good- any thoughts??

From what I've seen if you're in the U.S. you're going to want to go with the 2.0 ztech as the spi 2.0 has no viable HP gain and it's basically a commuter engine with a nasty valve seat issue..the ztech has upgrade options..turbos, headers etc..however if yours has a spi you'll need to do a computer swap wiring harness and trans I think. Essentially it's going to be project..mines a stock 2.0 spi with a rebuilt head due to the valve seat issue..won't win any races but it's a good commuter car..
